Everything I Packed for a Late-Summer Coastal Get-Away to Newport, Rhode Island
The Newport season kicks into full swing in early May and doesn’t wind down until early September. The temperatures are warm and pleasant, but as most New England coastal towns go, it can be a bit chilly in the morning or out on the water.

When I looked ahead at the extended forecast, I saw temperatures that registered as cold to me (compared to home in Texas). So, I packed a lot of layers, some sweaters, and long pants. But, when I got there, the low 70s did feel a bit warm in the sun. My sweater ended up tied around my waist by the afternoon.
Otherwise, my packing list held up. Next time I will throw in a pair of shorts or an extra tank top, but still keep a sweater in tow because it is, in fact, chilly in the morning and out on the water:)
The main draw of my Newport trip was the historic Gilded Age mansions. There is no dress code to visit the mansions, but I didn’t want to look like a bum when I sat down for tea. So, I packed some nicer outfits for my tours, and beachy layers for everything else.
The dining scene in Newport can go either way. It just depends on what you have booked. Overall, it is a casual vibe except for fine dining, of course. Thankfully, my hotel was very close to everything, making it easy to go back and change clothes when needed.
I didn’t check luggage for this quick, last-minute get-away. Everything fit in my 21″ Travelpro Carry-on Spinner and a personal tote bag.

Mix-and-match outfits for touring Newport’s Gilded Age mansions
Just to re-iterate, there isn’t a dress code for visiting the mansions and, given the amount of walking involved, it is important to be comfortable. But, whilst walking through these opulent estates, I would have felt under dressed showing up in my sweats. I made a bit of an effort to dress nicely, but still wore sneakers the entire time.
I wore a basic layering cami / tank top under both my sweater and blouse, which ended up being a good idea because my mid-day, the top layer was shed. The crossbody bag (or belt bag) is a must so you can be hands-free to take photos.

Beachy layers for coastal walks and water activities
I didn’t even pack a bathing suit because I knew the water would be entirely too cold for me. However, harbor sailing, walks along the coast, and waterfront dining call for breezy, beachy layers. Don’t forget to pack a beach towel or blanket if you plan on sitting on the beach or picnicking on the cliffs.

The final packing list
My flight into Boston Logan landed around noon, which gave me ample time to drive an hour and a half south to Newport, while stopping at the Green Animals Topiary Garden on the way. From there, I headed over to Bowen’s Wharf for my sunset sail. I didn’t have time to change at any point. So, I had to put a little thought into that first day ensemble. Everything else was easy-peasy. Here’s my final packing list for a 4-day weekend visit:

- Socks & intimates
- Jewelry
- Scarf / accessories
- Crossbody bag
- Baseball hat
- Beach towel
- Sunglasses
- Tennis shoes
- Flip flops

Packing for New England, I always gravitate towards preppy and nautical styles. If I don’t find what I need after scouring my closet, an online order from J.Crew usually can fill in the gaps. I also rely on basics from Nordstrom and Amazon.
